Medical Gases Now Regulated by Drug Administration

To improve the quality of medical gases and protect public drug safety, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (formerly the Department of Health) announced that medical carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are now classified as controlled drugs. The change, based on the drug administration of developed countries, aligns the medical gases management system with international management practices.
All medical institutions and members of the public should purchase Department of Health-approved medical gases only from legal pharmaceutical companies starting April 1, 2010.
